Most of us regulars here use and recommend usb card readers for all uploads. Readers aren't expensive and are available where ever cameras are sold.

Go to Menu on the Camera, go to communication, change it to Print/Ptp OR PC conection- what ever one its on change it to the other one.... this SHOULD let you upload without any special programs.

Well yes I have some advice.

Get the camera out and shoot with it. Use every mode the camera has all the way to full manual.
Shoot anything but shoot lots. Upload and look at the photos one by one.

If you're getting different lenses with the camera mount every lens and shoot with it as well. Look for proper exposure, auto focus and general operating condition of the lenses and the body.

If the camera has been properly cared for there should be no problems with it.

I generally don't recommend buying used but if you can actually use the camera first and you find everything is satisfactory then go for it.

Good Luck, Jim

Sure.

Take a CF card with you and do some tests with it using what ever lens the individual is selling with it.

Take the CF card home and using the card reader on your computer (or a USB 2.0 reader you can buy for under $10), look at the results of the images you shot on your large computer monitor.

If you shoot some shots of the blank sky, you will be able to quickly determine if you have any dust on the cameras sensor.

Check for obvious damage to the externals of the camera.

Switch it on in M mode and try a variety of shutter speeds see if any cause a problem (the camera shuts down or gives you an error message) put it into Av mode and turn the input scroller so that the number gets bigger. Press the small round button below the lens mount as you look through the viewfinder, see if its get darker.

Check the images are on the card.

Here (are) sample videos shot with Canon 5D MII. http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetProductArticlesAct&productID=249&articleTypeID=225

p.s. Please don't take this wrongly, although that Panasonic camera is a fine camera, but it's hardly a Leitz / Leica.

If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel DSLR camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:
AWriter is right

The D90 is under $1,000.
The 5D, Mark III is under $2,700.

Both prices are for the bodies only, lenses extra.

There are [only] two Digital SLRs at the moment that possess video recording capabilities: The Nikon D90, and Canon 5D Mark II.

EDIT [6:14pm PST]: I must point out that Vicseo's post is a bit misleading. The DMC-FZ28 is NOT a dSLR. It's a "superzoom", or point and shoot camera with a long zoom. What it lacks compared to the XT (or any other dSLR) is a big sensor, optical viewfinder, and ability to interchange lenses.
